Freewheel pulleys are essential components of the alternator and play a critical role in ensuring the longevity and efficiency of a vehicle’s belt drive, including the belt and the tensioner.
 
The primary function of the freewheel pulley is to decouple the alternator from the crankshaft, thereby reducing stress on the belt drive system and enabling smoother engine operation.
By allowing the alternator rotor to spin freely when the engine slows down or stops, the freewheel pulley improves efficiency of the belt system and avoids belt flutter.

<h2>Two Types of Freewheel Pulleys</h2>

These two freewheel pulleys, however, differ in their specifications and characteristics:

Designed with a reduced environmental impact in mind, this interface incorporates up to 30% recycled plastic. The Valeo Cyclee™ system is ideally suited for urban, trekking, and cargo bikes, including those tasked with transporting heavy loads or tackling hilly terrains. It can easily carry up to 315 kg (including the bike and rider), even on slopes exceeding 14% or when reversing. In urban environments, it provides a comfortable ride, even in traffic and at stoplights. <h2>A second life to electric bike batteries and motors</h2>
The European fleet of light urban mobility vehicles is expected to triple by 2031, reaching a total of 100 million units. This growth will include a significant number of professional fleets that experience intensive use and have higher breakdown rates. In line with a circular economy approach and leveraging 30 years of experience in automotive parts remanufacturing (such as clutches, starters, etc.), Valeo Service launched its first electric bike motor remanufacturing service in 2024 in partnership with Smovengo. Over 8,000 electric Vélib bikes in Paris are benefiting from this initiative. Also, each month, over 500 batteries are repaired at the Circular Electronics Laboratory in Nevers, boasting a material recovery rate of more than 90%.

<h2>What is a 48V DC-DC converter? </h2>
The 48V DC-DC converter is an electronic device that converts voltage between both 48V and 12V electrical networks, while remaining in Direct Current (DC).
This process—of efficiently converting energy between different voltage systems—is essential for the operation of modern vehicle electrical systems.
A 48V DC-DC converter is considered as bi-directional when it converts 48V to 12V (buck function) and 12V to 48V (boost function).
The 48V DC-DC converter used for PSA applications is bi-directional.
