Valeo Reman, Good to Better Preserve Resources

Reman is one of Valeo's key circular initiatives for the aftermarket, and is part of the 'I Care for the Planet' program—Valeo’s commitment to progressively reducing the environmental impact of the automotive aftermarket.
By reusing materials, Valeo’s remanufacturing limits new resource extraction and industrial waste.
At Valeo, remanufactured products include up to 80% of reused materials. With 55 million tonnes of electronic waste generated every year, discarding electronic and electrical parts because of a single faulty component is both wasteful and environmentally unsustainable.
In the words of Christophe Le Ligné, Valeo Group R&D VP and Light CTO:
“At Valeo, we are deeply committed to remanufacturing. Our ambition is to double the number of remanufactured products to 2 million by 2030, and, at the same time, we are expanding our range to offer more electric and electronic products. This major milestone will be achieved through our ability at building strong partnerships within our ecosystem, to deliver remanufactured high-tech products.”

Valeo Reman, as Good as New

Every manufactured part undergoes the same processes as new ones:

Each collected part is cleaned and disassembled

Components are individually controlled and then repaired or replaced if needed

The product is reassembled and tested to stringent automotive standards

Expanding and Promoting Circular Economy in the Aftermarket

Valeo’s 40+ years’ experience in remanufacturing electrical and mechanical products includes starters and alternators, compressors, brake calipers, DMF, heavy duty clutches and more recently front camera for passenger cars and even eMotors and Batteries for Ebikes.
Valeo offers online tutorials via its Valeo Tech Academy, including three new interactive modules for workshops.

Taking place from 23rd to the 27th September, 2024, in Hungary, Valeo’s EV Tech Days proved to be an excellent occasion to inform key customers and journalists from across Europe exactly what the aftermarket division stands for in terms of electrification.

Showcasing Cutting-Edge Electrification and Innovation

Made up of three parts—a plenary conference in Budapest, onsite workshops and the visit of Valeo’s Veszprém Factory, a multi-products site that specializes in the production of high-voltage technologies and systems for well-known automotive car makers.

The EV Tech Days showcased Valeo’s approach to High Voltage Powertrain Electrification and its associated Thermal Management,48V Hybrid Technology, and EV Training with Valeo's Tech Academy.

The Future is Getting Brighter

By 2030, 93% of all new cars will include a form of electrification and one-third of the European car parc will consist of electrified vehicles (either fully electric or hybrid).

This is good news. Electrification is emerging as the most viable, affordable, and energy-efficient solution to reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive industry, which currently stands at about 18% of global CO2 emissions.

Levels of Electrification

When discussing “electrification,” many immediately think of fully electric vehicles, but it encompasses much, much more.

The current and future car parcs include multiple levels of electrification: low-voltage systems like 48V mild hybrids (combining small electric motors with internal combustion engines for improved fuel efficiency), high-voltage systems like 400V and 800V for both full and plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles.

Valeo’s strength lies in its ability to support all of these levels of electrification.

A Pioneer in Electrification

As a pioneer in electrification for over 20 years, Valeo has continually introduced innovative solutions for electrified vehicles. A brief history shows that:

In 2004, Valeo created the iStARS system, a belt starter/alternator that optimizes Stop-Start functionality.

In 2012, Valeo launched its 48V Belt Starter Generator (iBSG), providing mild-hybrid solutions.

In 2016, Valeo oversaw the creation of the Valeo Siemens eAutomotive JV.

And now, in 2024, Valeo is set to produce the next generation of “rare-earth-free” electric motors with Renault.

As of today, one-third of the world’s vehicles are equipped with Valeo electrics, from alternators right through to high-voltage systems.

Leveling Up Mechanics’ Skills

To meet the evolving needs of the industry, Valeo launched the Valeo Tech Academy, an innovative training program that offers both digital and in-person learning.

With one in two mechanics unable to maintain or repair electric vehicles, Valeo is committed to leveling up and supporting the aftermarket beyond just supplying spare parts.

Ultimately, Valeo’s goal is very simple—to help build the sustainable mobility of tomorrow. And over the course of the EV Tech Days, Valeo was able to demonstrate and share its simple vision for the future.

At Valeo’s EV Tech Days, key customers and journalists from across Europe learned exactly what Valeo’s aftermarket division stands for in terms of electrification.

Valeo presented Valeo Cyclee™, its offer for ebikes, at Eurobike 2024, in Frankfurt, Germany, from 3rd to 7th July. It showcased the latest evolution of the 48V mid-drive unit which is now even quieter, and also a new Human Machine Interface (HMI).

An even more silent mid-drive unit

Valeo Cyclee™ 48V mid-drive unit is adaptive and understands what the rider wants. With a 7 speed gear automatic transmission and responding with a 130Nm torque - the highest level available on the market - it boosts all the rides, even the hardest ones.

Valeo Cyclee™ mid-drive unit is now more silent than ever with a noise level of the complete electric propulsion solution reduced of around -7dB. To reach this new level of NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) efficiency, the new version of the Valeo Cyclee™ mid-drive unit presents a new gear geometry, and additional ribs on the cover to smooth the vibrations and additional bridges on stator stacks. With this evolution, Valeo Cyclee™ mid drive unit offers the same noise level as other less powerful solutions.

A new Human-Machine Interface solution

To give its users the best experience, Valeo keeps on improving its solutions. Valeo Cyclee™ introduces a stylish Human-Machine Interface (HMI) solution made of a smart dock, a 2” touch display and a remote with a rotative throttle. The new HMI seamlessly transitions from city to mountain, thanks to multiple assembly positions and a removable display. Valeo smart dock Phone-as-a-Key system also automatically locks the eBike when the rider steps 3 meters away. Although an anti-theft system already existed on the motor gearbox, this new device enhances user safety with a secure, easy-to-use locking system tailored to the needs of e-bike users. This technology brings an answer to the rise of thefts due to the growing value of ebikes.

Aiming to reduce its ecological footprint, this new HMI has been designed for easy assembly and disassembly, and the materials used include up to 30% recycled plastics.

Beyond the design and the selection of more sustainable material, Valeo’s HMI uses Velco Suite, a software suite developed to meet the connectivity and adaptability needs of cyclists, as well as those of bike sales and repair networks.

This software provides connected services through 3 distinct applications:

Assembly Assist module: This WEB application is intended for bike makers and dedicated to the pairing and integration tests of drive unit, battery, connected HMI on bikes at the end of the assembly line. It is also used to report diagnostic information for e-Bikes.

Diagnostic Service module: this web application is intended for bikes shops & dealers to diagnose & calibrate the ebike, update electric kit firmware components and provide drive unit & components providers hotline support towards bike shops.

Rider module: Velco Rider is a white label mobile application for the riders to offer the best riding experience thanks to valuable services. The mobile app can be customized into the ebike's brands.

The complete solution is multi-engine and is aimed at all ebikes brands wanting to offer a digital experience to their customers.

The Valeo Cyclee™ offer includes two HMI versions: an entry pack with the smart dock and remote, and a premium pack by adding the 2” touch display.

Valeo involved in the circular economy of ebikes

In addition to its original equipment activities, Valeo is also involved in the circular economy of ebikes. Valeo and Smovengo, the operator of Vélib' Métropole, the self-service bicycle hire scheme run by the City of Paris and 64 of its communes, have joined forces to recondition the motors and batteries of the 8,000 electric Velibs that ply the streets of Greater/Grand Paris.

Valeo presents its latest technologies for smarter, safer and greener mobilities at Auto Shanghai 2023. China is Valeo's largest country with 35 sites and nearly 20,000 employees. Valeo believes in "being Chinese in China" and has strengthened its presence in the country since 1994. We are now an integral part of the local ecosystem and our 4,000 engineers are preparing the future of mobility

For almost three decades, Valeo has built trustful relationships with Chinese manufacturers and suppliers. Our four business groups and Valeo Service are active in the country and produce locally, with a local supply chain, for the Chinese market. More than 90% of our production in China is for the national automotive market, which is the largest in the world. In 2022, China represented 18% of the group’s sales. Chinese OEMs, both traditional and new, represent more than 40% of our OEM sales and 45% of our order intake in the country.
ZHOU Song, Valeo China President explains “in 2022, Valeo launched the ‘Move Up’ plan, which identified four strategic development directions that align with market trends: electrification acceleration, ADAS acceleration, interior experience reinvention and lighting everywhere. These pillars are the center of the evolution of the automotive industry in China. The first year of implementation in China has demonstrated strong results with a sales growth of 7%, overperforming the market, and an order intake representing 2.2 times our sales.“

Preparing the Future of Mobility in China

Valeo has 14 research and development centers in China with 4,000 engineers who work on preparing the future of mobility for the Chinese market, but also for other regions. After setting up a global technology center in Wuhan, a Valeo China Innovation and Mobility Center was opened in Beijing last year and a new center for innovation in ADAS will open in Shanghai soon.
“Innovation is a key driver of Valeo. The group has always placed China in an important development position and will continue to increase investment in China. At Valeo China, we are proud to contribute to the group’s innovation, for the Chinese market but also overseas. We are looking forward to strengthening local R&D efforts and R&D personnel training, together with our partners, to build an infinite and sustainable future for mobility” said GU Jianmin, Valeo China CTO.
In addition to internal product innovation and optimization, Valeo has always been committed to open innovation, working with well-known academic institutions, innovative technology companies and universities to actively cooperate, and maintain a competitive advantage for future business through continuous innovation.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Acceleration

As a pioneer and the world leader in ADAS, Valeo has developed all the sensors and relevant intelligence allowing the car to make the right decision. A Chinese OEM has recently recognized Valeo for creating a complete Level 2 autonomous driving system using a 5C-5R-12U sensor set (5 cameras, 5 radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors), a domain controller, and a software stack designed for assisted driving Level 2 and automated parking.
On the booth, Valeo will present the award-winning SCALA 3 LiDAR. Valeo SCALA 1 and 2 made conditional autonomous driving in traffic jams a reality. SCALA 3 dramatically increases the domain of operation – and therefore the customer value – of private vehicles thanks to a wider scope of use and higher speed support. Valeo is also positioned as a leader in robotaxis equipment as SCALA 3 enables our clients to make robotaxis a reality at scale, using a proven, best-in-class technology in mass production. It has already been selected by 3 companies in North America, Europe and Asia, bringing the orders to more than 1 billion euros. It recreates a 3D image of the vehicle’s surroundings using a point cloud, with an as yet unparalleled resolution for an automotive system.
As cars become more autonomous and more connected, vehicle architectures are evolving to embed more sensors and software. Valeo is developing innovative and powerful domain controllers for both parking and driving automation. Since many Chinese OEMs are supporting the fusion of ADAS and Infotainment into a single domain controller, Valeo is working on a first standard solution, to go into production in 2024. This cost-effective solution for L2 vehicles will comply with GSR regulation and NCAP.

Reinvention of the Interior Experience

Valeo is reinventing life on board offering a new level of comfort, safety, and immersive experience. Thanks to its expertise in perception systems and artificial intelligence, Valeo is offering solutions for the entire interior experience journey. At AutoShanghai 2023, we will present technologies in the areas of access (phone as a key), monitoring (interior cocoon & driver monitoring system) and interaction (woodlike interactive surfaces).
For example, the driver monitoring system is a life-saving technology, based on an infrared camera that tracks driver alertness and detects signs of drowsiness or distraction. Our AI-based facial recognition algorithms have been trained using data primarily from Chinese individuals to detect drowsiness, distraction, and emotion facial expressions accurately in order to ensure high accuracy for our Chinese customers. Our system has been in mass production in China since 2019, and we have received a great deal of positive feedback from end users.

Lighting Everywhere

With vehicles becoming more and more electric and autonomous, lighting will be even more important – both in and around the vehicle, to assist driving, transmit signals and promote intelligence and personalization.
China is a trendsetter and a very dynamic market, open to the unlimited possibilities that Valeo offers in terms of design and communication. We partner with Chinese OEMs to facilitate the development of visibility solutions for their platforms thanks to our high performance dynamic OLED lamps allowing design freedom, high-end finishing, personalization as well as a first level of communication.
On the booth, Valeo will present Valeo Lighting Experience and the Digital Twin. Valeo is developing artificial intelligence systems to define and visualize holistic designs in real time by combining style, functionality and technologies. These cutting-edge systems will accelerate the virtual development of lighting solutions, with prototypes built at the latest possible stage, thus reducing development costs. The solutions also resolve the issue of hardware obsolescence by offering style updates throughout the life of the vehicle. Our partnership with Ningbo Swell also enables us to offer state of the art signaling integrated in central areas, easier local development and decoration.
China is at the forefront of the development of autonomous driving. Our sensor cleaning portfolio contributes to the reliability of automated cars, whatever the weather and seasons.
Finally, interior lighting is also being reinvented and extended across surfaces to create a more immersive experience for passengers. It can be used for a variety of purposes such as delivering navigation information, visualizing music, creating personalized and relaxing atmospheres, etc. Immersion is made possible by engaging multiple senses such as sight, sound and touch.

Valeo hosts the 2022 Seminar of Mobilians SMAVA bureau

The third seminar of SMAVA bureau members took place on 9th and 10th June 2022 at Valeo’s brand new research center in Créteil, France.

The third seminar of SMAVA bureau members took place on 9th and 10th June 2022 at Valeo’s brand new research center in Créteil, France.

On the agenda, an overlook on the future of mobility and automotive aftermarket

Members of the SMAVA Bureau of MOBILIANS (the employers' organization founded to defend the interests of companies in the French automotive distribution and services sector) were welcomed by Valeo Service President Éric Schuler and Vice-President Marlène Carrias-Iked for a lively event filled with detailed presentations and involved exchanges.

The major discussion points covered during the seminar concerned the future of the automotive aftermarket, with a strong focus on Valeo’s strategy for electrification. One of Valeo’s major goals, moving forwards, is to continue leading the industry in the wider efforts being made to decarbonise transport.

Electrification, a strategic pillar for Valeo

This was evident on day one of the seminar, which saw detailed presentations given on the outlook of the aftermarket; the increasing sales of electrified personal vehicles (from mild-hybrid to full electric) and the impact this will have on aftersales; and lastly, the internal architecture of an electric vehicle, along with the subsequent operations carried out on these vehicles. With more electrified vehicles on the road, there should be fewer workshop entries. Servicing them, however, will be more costly as the technology becomes increasingly more complex.

On day two, an analysis was given by a representative of international law firm Bird & Bird on “Security Gateways and Competition Law” followed by three more Valeo-led presentations on the 48V electrification kits for forms of mobility other than passenger cars, solutions for electric bicycles, and charging stations.

Innovation, a key for the future of mobility

As Eric Girard, President of the multi-brand aftermarket service SMAVA, said:

“We are very grateful to Valeo for welcoming us to this remarkable site and presenting their innovations to us. I am convinced that we will continue our exchanges and certainly enrich our collaboration in order to face, together, the technological changes that are coming.”

Éric Schuler, President of Valeo Service (the aftermarket division of Valeo) concluded:

“Faced with major and complex (industry) developments, we need to work together to develop offers and services that workshops and drivers expect. Given the novelty, complexity, and multiple impacts of these developments, synergy and collaborative work are essential. Valeo will always be there to support aftersales players, so that we are able to collectively find the best solutions.”

Valeo showcased major innovations for safer, cleaner and more diverse mobility at IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany

Valeo showcased major innovations for safer, cleaner and more diverse mobility at IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany

Valeo, a major global player in the future of mobility
From September 7-12, 2021, Valeo took part in the IAA Mobility Show held in Munich, Germany. More than a trade show, IAA Mobility is a glimpse into the future of personal transportation. It’s an event on the future of travel, a forum of experts around electric mobility and more broadly on climate change and the best solutions to achieve carbon neutrality. It brings out the latest in transportation technology ranging from drones to electric bikes, motorbikes and cars. The innovations presented demonstrated that Valeo has become a leading global mobility player. Its broad array of smart technology solutions are designed to equip all forms of mobility, not just cars. Valeo is now the technological leader in three key, rapidly developing sectors: vehicle electrification, advanced driving assistance systems and cabin air treatment.
Valeo and the acceleration of vehicle electrification
A broad offer from low to high-voltage systemsValeo has become a system-oriented manufacturer in vehicle electrification. At the IAA Mobility 2021 event, the Group exhibited a comprehensive portfolio of smart, efficient technologies that allow cars to travel far, fast and for a long time, at affordable cost and with optimised comfort, without emitting a single gram of CO2 (in the case of an all-electric vehicle). From 48V motors for small urban vehicles to greater than 60V solutions, Valeo is a world leader in low and high-voltage systems for electric vehicles. At the show, Valeo exhibited an electric innovation for small sedans designed by the Valeo-Siemens eAutomotive joint venture which consists of a comprehensive all-electric powertrain system of 100 kW, including the electric motor, the inverter and the reducer. By end-2022, 90 new cars featuring Valeo-Siemens eAutomotive joint venture high-voltage technologies will be on the market worldwide. Charging stations: a “must” for the development of electric vehiclesTo encourage the wider use of electric cars, Valeo has developed an innovative range of charging stations. Valeo unveiled its first comprehensive charging solution, which includes equipment, technical support and associated services. Valeo’s charging stations are suitable for all types of electric vehicles; they are designed for both electric and plug-in passenger cars as well as light commercial vehicles. They can be used, regardless of vehicle voltage, for charging at home, at work and in semi-public charging stations, thereby covering at least 80% of all uses while offering intelligent energy management features. The first charging stations are set to be launched in 2022. eBike: Valeo makes its entry in new urban mobility systemsValeo's expertise is not just about cars, it also lies in the electrification of all new urban mobility systems: bikes, scooters, delivery droids, etc. which were also demonstrated at IAA Mobility as well as in the streets of Munich. One week before the trade show, Valeo’s Smart e-Bike System had already made its debut at Eurobike, the leading global trade show for the bike business held in Friedrichshafen, Germany.Valeo showcased the most high-performance electric assistance system for bikes to date with three prototypes featuring its technology: a city bike, a mountain bike and a three-wheeled cargo bike for transporting loads. Previously unavailable on the market, the Valeo technology developed in partnership with France‑based Effigear comprises a 48V electric motor and a seven-speed automatic, adaptive gearbox in a single unit which is located in the pedal assembly. With a torque of 130 Newton meters, this unit provides the best electric assistance for bikes to date. Thanks to Valeo, electric bikes can now benefit from the same advantages as cars in terms of adaptive automatic gearboxes. This great innovation received second place at the IAA 2021 Best of Mobility Awards.
Valeo and the acceleration of driving assistance systems
Like electrification, the market for ADAS, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, is accelerating rapidly and is expected to triple in size by 2030. Valeo is also the world leader in this field, with one in four new cars currently equipped with its technologies. At the Munich event, visitors were able to try out Level 3 automation and see how Valeo’s human-machine interface systems make the transition between autonomous driving and manual driving as safe, smooth and intuitive as possible. Going further, Valeo also unveiled Valeo Drive4U, a prototype autonomous car equipped with Valeo sensors (LiDARs, cameras, radars, ultrasound, etc.) which was also seen driving in automated mode both on the open road in and outside the city of Munich. Finally, Valeo also presented its Automated Valet Parking, an autonomous parking system developed in collaboration with BMW, that allows a car to park all by itself in a parking lot. So what’s new about this system? It relies in part on Valeo systems that are installed not only on the vehicle, but also in the infrastructure of the parking lot itself. This capability further demonstrates Valeo’s position as a technology provider for the entire ecosystem, both inside and outside the car.
Beyond mobility: automotive technologies to support Covid diagnosis
Valeo’s technologies in the field of health protection are so efficient that they now even go beyond vehicles. Building on its automotive sensors and cameras, Valeo has developed a health diagnostic system for detecting vital signs which can evaluate a patient’s health risks and, in particular, assess whether they are likely to have Covid or not. This equipment was validated with the help of several health organisations and was also on display at the IAA Mobility Show.
